On Friday July 27th, bicyclists taking part in a monthly Critical mass ride were inundated by angry threats and harassment from passing motorists. |
On Friday July 27th, bicyclists taking part in a monthly Critical mass ride were inundated by angry threats and harassment from passing motorists. According to attendees at the event, riders were subjected to many angry honks and shouts to get out of the street. In addition, many motorists engaged in illegal and dangerous passing of the riders, and were incensed at the riders for engaging in their legal right to ride bikes in the streets of Champaign-Urbana. Witnesses stated that one car driver went so far as to drive up along side of the riders and berate them. While doing so, the driver's car was straddling the yellow line and she and nearly caused two accidents while yelling at the bicyclists. Event organizers stated that Critical Mass riders will continue to meet at the corner of Wright and Green on the last Friday of every month at 5:15 to engage in their right to ride bikes in the streets. |
