RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - What a great retirement package Shell Executive Murdered for not strong arming Agreement on the New Brazil-Bolivia gas pipeline |
Todd Staheli and his wife, Michelle, both U.S. citizens, were found by their 10-year-old son inside their luxurious, guarded condominium in Rio's upscale Barra da Tijuca neighborhood early on Sunday with wounds that where caused by an ax or Machete, a Shell spokesman told Reuters.
Todd, 39, died soon afterward, while his wife was rushed to hospital where she is in a coma with severe head injuries.
Police said the fact that nothing was stolen and a sharp object was used as a weapon suggested a personal vendetta. That made the killing stand out from the usual robbery-related violence in Rio, which has one of the highest murder rates in the world.
"It really is a rather complex situation," Rio de Janeiro State Security Secretary Anthony Garotinho told reporters. "The case is pretty different from the norm."
Police said the couple's children, aged 3, 8, 10 and 13, reported hearing no noise. They said there were no signs of a break-in or robbery, even though jewels and expensive watches were easily visible.
Security equipment did not register anything suspicious, according to the guards, who said Staheli received no visits over the weekend. The family's chauffeur and maid were away.
Staheli moved to Brazil three months ago to be Shell's vice president for joint ventures in natural gas and power in South America's Southern Cone, which includes Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. Before that he worked for Shell in Ukraine.
Garotinho said Staheli's 13-year-old daughter had told police that her father had received a threatening phone call some days earlier.
"In an informal statement... she said her father had received a phone call from London complaining about the way he was handling the project for the Brazil-Bolivia gas pipeline,".
