The 33rd annual Peace Bazaar will be held Dec. 6th in Champaign, IL. Funds raised support peace and social justice groups, including the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center. |
The Peace Bazaar is an annual community event, now in its 33rd year, where we sell gifts (new and recycled), UNICEF cards and calendars, household items, toys, crafts, books, plants, fresh-baked goods, art by local artists, gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses, and much more. Funds raised from the event go to groups promoting peace and social justice (see below).
This year’s Peace Bazaar will be held Saturday, December 6th at Community United Church of Christ at 805 S. 6th St. (at the corner of 6th and Daniel) in Champaign, IL. Everyone is invited to participate.
Local recipients of 2003 Peace Bazaar proceeds will include the Urbana- Champaign Independent Media Center, the BOAST Academy after-school program, El Centro por los Trabajadores and St. Jude Catholic Worker House. International recipients include Doctors Without Borders, Heifer Project International, Ploughshares, and NISGUA, the Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala. Local peace activist Meridith Kruse is working with NISGUA in Guatemala and bazaar proceeds will help pay some of her living and traveling expenses.
Each year, 93% to 95% of all funds raised go directly to recipients with just 5% to 7% of funds used to pay expenses. Last year in 2002, the Peace Bazaar raised $3325 and donated $475 to each of seven groups supporting peace and social justice, including the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center. We are pleased to be donating to the IMC again this year.
Everyone is invited to come shopping on Saturday, December 6th. We have some spectacular deals and treasures just waiting to be found. The Peace Bazaar is being held at Community United Church of Christ at 6th and Daniel in Champaign on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free parking is available in the parking garage just north of the church.
Organizers are seeking donations of used items which are still in good shape and suitable for gifts or use in the home. Some of the things we are looking for (and will be selling) include decorative items, toys, pottery, ceramics, dishes, cookware, pasta makers, bread makers and other small kitchen appliances, hand-made crafts, antiques, house plants, works by local artists, sports equipment, musical instruments, multicultural art, handspun and woven scarves, hats, and wraps, sweaters suitable for giving as gifts, children’s books, cook books, coffee table books, gardening books, recently published fiction, furniture, microwaves, televisions, and a few pieces of furniture. Please call 344-7942 first about donations of furniture, microwaves, televisions or other large items. Please do NOT donate used clothing, used computers, toy guns or toy soldiers.
Donations may be taken to 412 W Oregon St in Urbana anytime between now and Dec 5th. Items may also be taken to Community United Church of Christ between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. during the evenings of Dec 3 – 5. If you have questions concerning suitability of items, please call Joan at 344-7942 or e-mail jnelshoppen (at) insightbb.com.
Volunteers are always welcome and are what makes this event happen. Two hours of your time can make a big difference. Call Joan at 344-7942 or Claire at 356-6710 or e-mail jnelshoppen (at) insightbb.com for more information.
