In Madison county, a development called "The Homes at Liberty Place" will have a "distinctly patriotic" theme with streets named after the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Donald Rumsfeld, and George Bush. |
Street names to salute patriots

George Bush Boulevard. Eisenhower Boulevard. Garfield Court. Reagan Drive. Roosevelt Drive.
Those are a few of the street names proposed for The Homes at Liberty Place, a new subdivision being built in Jarvis Township, near Troy. The subdivision is one of the newest projects by R. P. Development. It will have a distinctly patriotic theme, and each of the 13 street names will reflect that theme, said Robert L. Plummer, president of R. P. Lumber Co. in Edwardsville.
"Finding street names is harder to do than people think because so many of them are used up," Plummer said Monday morning from his office at 514 East Vandalia St. in Edwardsville. "Even presidential names are used up. So we wanted some names that showed some American history."
Most have a presidential or military connection. Along with the presidential names is one for former Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater (Goldwater Circle), and two are named for former U.S. generals Omar Bradley (Bradley Court) and Douglas MacArthur (McArthur Drive, spelled McArthur in the preliminary plat). Gen. George S. Patton also has a street named for him (Patton Drive), as does former U.S. Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall (Marshall Drive). And there is a Chamberlain Drive, named, presumably, for former British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.
Added to the mix are Rush Limbaugh (Limbaugh Drive) and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (Rumsfeld Drive).
The Homes at Liberty Place is on Bouse Road, near Old Troy Road, between Interstate 270 and the city of Troy. Troy officials are expected to officially annex the land into the city. Plummer said he expects that to happen soon. "Troy is a very good community. Good school district, good people," he said.
Several workers were at the site Monday morning, finishing up the preliminary work of building the streets and extending water and sewer lines to the subdivision. In all there will be 403 lots, ranging from 10,000 to 17,000 square feet. Most will be in the 12,000 square foot range, Plummer said. They will cost from $140,000 to $250,000, he said.
"We'd like to get some homes where young families or single families, or even retirement families, can live and get new construction homes that they can afford" he said.
Plummer has also been building a 10-to12-homes subdivision in Moro, known as Patriot's Crossing, with street names such as Patton Drive and Westmoreland Drive.
The Homes at Liberty Place was one of four subdivision plats that were approved Nov. 6 by the Madison County Land Use Committee. The committee also gave its approval to:
- 32 lots for Hidden Acres subdivision in Holiday Shores.
- one lot for Rull Acres subdivision in Omphghent Township.
- four lots for Duncan Estates near Troy.
- five lots for Tiffany Terrace near St. Jacob.
"It's amazing the growth," said Madison County Chairman Alan Dunstan. "And I'm not saying it's the best thing in the world. We have a lot of services to provide for. But you're not going to stop it." |
