MINUTES
Public I 2 Oct 2003
present: Bijan (facilitating...yes-again), Darrin, Maggie, Meghan, Lisa =
(taking notes...yes-again), Paul (late...yes-again)

Brooke Anderson and Claudia Lennhoff (director) from Champaign County =
Health Care Consumers joined us to talk about health care as theme for =
this issue. They mentioned that what they like about the PI is how a =
local issue is put into a wider perspective. Topics they would like to =
contribute relate to access to health care, Provena Hospital's dialysis =
unit, and a new campaign to develop hospital interpreter services, which =
we all agreed would tie in well with the article Ricky Baldwin will be =
writing about the immigrant Freedom Ride.

The dialysis issue has to do with the fact that hospitals are no longer =
interested in offering dialysis. This is now being taken up by four =
for-profit companies around the country, setting up free-standing units, =
no longer tied to hospitals so no longer having additional services =
hospitals provide. Also, the profit orientation means there's much =
cost-cutting so things like cleanliness are compromised. Government, and =
tax dollars, are subsidizing sub-standard care. This is also emblematic =
of how other health services could go -- splintering and fracturing of =
health care system. In Champaign this is the Renal Research Institute, =
in front of Provena.=20

Interpreters' services -- big problem in our area -- they get many calls =
about this on hotline.=20

Other topics -- (1)explain the different insurance plans backed by the =
various would-be presidential candidates. Explain them, evaluate them, =
relate to different countries where they are in practice. Also lay out =
the history, including fiasco in Clinton admin.=20
(2)Pat Widdick(?) -- gave talk on nurses' perspective. May like to write =
it up.
(3)State of Illinois has new legislation on hospital disclosure/staffing =
levels/morbidity rates -- should be publicized.
(4)Changes in weapons law =3D public health problem.
(5)Belden talking to Larry Duffet(?) about an article on health =
justice(?)

Articles on dialysis and translation services can be easily done =
[include a sidebar with facts in Spanish]. Other topics could take time =
but they are interested in pursuing them, perhaps with student =
researchers. Especially on insurance plans.
They will give us what they can by Oct 16, first draft deadline. Brooke =
asked that we remind her as the date is approaching.

Re: Public I 10/2/2003 Minutes (Any Updates On This?)
Current rating: 0

The Public I print group meets every Thursday at 5:15 pm at the IMC in downtown Champaign. Minutes are sent after each meeting to the print group listserv and the general IMC listserv. Our newest issue will go to press on Thursday and will hit the streets soon after. We have had 4 meetings since this October 2 meeting. Since you obviously got these from the listserv, I'm surprised you didn't see the following meetings' minutes.
