"Nope. There's only been one post hidden in this entire thread. I thought it was better
to have this discussion out in the open. I think it's the best way to expose and clear up
misunderstandings." --Gehrig
Gehrig, I have been trying to be objective here, if there is such a thing. But you have
just been caught in a lie. The IMC with which I am involved has been very interested in
this development, so I have been following this discussion on and off for the past day or
so. I have not been focused exclusively on this issue, as I have many other things to do.
But when I saw that comments were immediately disappearing from the newswire, I became
interested in what people were trying to say, and what UC people were trying to hide. So
I started sporadically copying posts when I happened upon them. Now, as I said, I have
not been following closely enough to have caught them all. But here are at least three
messages that I saw on the wire, and that disappeared without a trace:

How dare you make such a move, which reflects on ALL IMCistas, and then imperiously
declare that the discussion is over? That any response to this outrage is "off topic" and
will therefore be hidden? How fucking dare you.
And how especially dare you state that it is "IMC" that is hiring, and not the clueless,
privileged asses at "UC IMC," who do NOT represent the vast majority of indymedia
journalists throughout the world. How fucking dare you.
You are in violation of the IMC principles of unity, item #5, and you are afraid to even
allow your critics a voice. Clearly, you know that you are in the wrong. You cannot
continue to thumb your nose at the worldwide movement of real, revolutionary media, and
still call yourself an IMC. Clearly, you are not. You are merely another link in a long,
long chain of watered-down, self-congratulatory, second-rate, pseudo-corporate-whore,
wanna-be liberal media mouths. You do not deserve the IMC name, and you certainly do not
deserve to speak for the rest of us.

01 Sep 2006Wow. You people really have no idea how much you have betrayed all the rest of
us. We,
who believe in Indymedia, and who understand it to its core.
All day I have watched as comments which express the horror we all feel at this
announcement disappear into the ether. Trust me, you will not silence the rest of us. We
do not concur.
"Indymedia" is NOT hiring. UC "Indy" is not real indymedia. You are clones, sell-outs,
damn liberals, and cogs of the machine. I hearby inform you that you do not stand for me,
or for anyone else who really believes in alternatives. How dare you profess to create
paid "indymedia" positions. (Mostly, I assume, to pay yourselves.) I find this
disgusting. Truly disgusting.
And my personal favorite:

When you ask to get paid for doing indymedia work, you're opening a jagged, rusty,
tetanus-infested can of worms. You're sliding down that slippery slope toward compromise
and mediocrity. You're selling out. More than that, you're placing a monetary value on
something that can only be cheapened by the effort. How much is your integrity worth? And
what will you tell contributors to the site, when they want to know why you're getting
paid but they are not? Payment for media activist work opens up a hierarchy that stinks
of the corporate model. This is just not the place for it, in my opinion. Asking for
money changes you from a comrade-in-arms with other activists in the community and turns
you into a parasite. Will you share the wages you make with the people whose stories you
tell? No? Then why should they want to share their stories with you? Your motives become
suspect, and people naturally begin to question what's in it for them. It's a contagious
and self-sustaining disease. Please, let us not go there.

Yes, Gehrig, I think the best way to clear this up would be an open, honest discussion
about why you are violating the indy principles, and why you are lying about it.
Lots of people are paying attention, UC. You are flailing. |
