The story is that attempted suicides are occurring frequently among the US soldiers stationed in Iraq. Most of the cases are injuring themselves in an attempt to be sent back home.
Suicides among the American troops stationed in Iraq are occurring one after another, and since President Bush declared an end to the large scale fighting in May, the deaths have climbed to 13. This is a number equal to more than ten percent of the number of soldiers that have died in official fighting.
The reason for many of the suicides is, in the hopes of returning home, they shoot a gun into their own stomach or legs, injure it, and try to receive treatment in the United States. However, some hit a bad place, and end up dying.
The soldiers spend their time among themselves and contact their families over the internet, but the American army is worrying over how to handle the situation.
Note: The news segment showed some soldiers repairing a truck, reading email and sitting around, and then a staircase in a building they occupy, which is full of graffiti. A large part of graffiti they showed is a drawing of Calvin from "Calvin and Hobbes" where he is saying "Can I please go home now?". |
