CIA Role in Expanding US Role in Colombia Current rating: 0
07 Feb 2001
The CIA has a long history of involvement in gun- and drug-smuggling in cooperation with willing players in security agencies that it has helped fund and advise in Latin America. The fall from grace of Vladimiro Montesinos, the director of Peru's version of the CIA (known as SIN), percipatated the fall from power of Presidente Alberto Fujirori late last year. They had jointly ruled Peru with an iron fist and the blessing of the CIA.

OPPOSITION MP: CIA AND SIN BEHIND ARMS CONTRABAND WITH COLOMBIAN GUERRILLA
(BRIEF, POLITICS/ECONOMY)

The CIA (US Central Intelligence Agency) supplied arms to the Colombian guerrilla through the Peruvian Secret services
(SIN) to justify the launching of Plan Colombia and therefore the US military intervention in the South American nation.
This was the accusation launched yesterday on the pages of the national El Comercio newspaper by Robinson
Rivadeneyra, parliamentarian of the Perú Posible party, led by the presidential candidate Alejandro Toledo. The
parliamentarian is conducting autonomous investigations into the role in arms trafficking with Colombia of Vladimiro
Montesinos – former strongman of the Peruvian secret services and right hand man of ex-president Alberto Fujimori – that
various witnesses in military circles have indicated as the real mind behind the operations. The improvement of the
Colombian guerrillas military capacity – denounced Rivadeneyra – was useful to Washington for the launching of the
anti-drug project in the region. Plan Colombia, backed by the Us with $1.300-million in combat equipment for the regular
troops, was strongly criticised both in the country and out for its strictly military connotations. (BO)
