after two weeks still there are people in Swedish prison, held there in total isolation w/o a chance to choose their own lawyer... give public support. |
Dear Colleagues,
five young anti-globalisation activists are in jail since the activities around the EU-summit in Goethenbourg on the 15th of June. They demonstrated peacefully against EU-summit and the effects of the EU-policy on people in Europe. They are all around 20 years old. One of them is an active member of the union of mediaworkers and a member of the board of youth representatives of that union in Berlin. Two others belong to the periphery of the Berlin youth sector of the union.
Long after the demonstrations in the morning when they were on their way back to their accommodations in a local school they were arrested without any reason. More than 30 policemen arbitrarily picked out five out of a group of about 20 young people all of which arrived with a bus of young union people from Berlin.
Since then they are arrested as prisoners on remand. At the 29th of June there is the next date to review the charge of breach of public peace and rioting. Though the rest of the Berlin group who returned after the incident assured they were not part of any unlawful activities and were protesting peacefully with the majority of the demonstration.
Up to today they have been denied any phonecall even to their parents. We are informed via their compulsory assigned lawyers that they are currently held in isolated custody in cells 18 squarefeet small. Most of them are not even allowed to go out on the court, they spend 24 hors in their cells, are not allowed to read new newspapers or watch TV. They are denied any kind of contact to the outside world.
These hard proceedings point towards the attempt of the Swedish juridical and political system to punish these youth for deeds they did not commit. It is obvious they want to state an example and by way of this further criminalise the whole antiglobalisation movement regardless. Particularly there is the danger that critical members of the unions and others critical of capitalist globalisation are stigmatized as violent hooligans and by this are isolated from the union and labor movement.
We call on all of you, especially those active in the unions, to protest against the imprisonments and to support their immediate release. Help us build pressure and prevent their conviction.
We propose that you bring in motions in your union branches or wherever you are active containing the following immediate demands:
n Immediate release of all imprisoned anti-globalisation activists.
n Immediate release of the young activists organised around the union youth - Immediate release of the member of the executive board of the media union youth
Immediate lifting of the isolation while in remand custody - they shall get the right to have free contact with their family, lawyers of their choice and their union brothers and sisters. Against all restriction of minimal democratic rights
For the setting up of an independent commission to review the events in Goethenbourg with the inclusion of Swedish and German union members and of the European Union Federation.
