The Shortwave Report 7/6/01 ¡LISTEN GLOBALLY! Current rating: 0
06 Jul 2001
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinions recorded from a shortwave radio. Free to rebroadcast. With times and freqs for listening at home. Netherlands, Russia, Germany, China, Spain, Cuba.
The latest Shortwave Report (July 6) is up on the web at outfarpress.com (13.5MB/29:32). As always, it's free to rebroadcast and I would appreciate notification if you air it. This week's show has stories from Radio Netherlands, the Voice of Russia, Radio Deutsche Welle, China Radio International, Spanish National Radio, and Radio Havana Cuba. From Radio Netherlands- an appeals court in Chile postponed for the 4th time the decision whether or not to charge Pinochet; at the Tribunal in the Hague, Miloshovec is defiant and says the reason for the trial is to justify NATO's bombings. The Voice of Russia goes more in-depth with the Tribunal, with Miloshovec saying the trial is further genocide of Serbs; former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark says the Tribunal and extradition are illegal. From Deutsche Welle- a court in Belgium considers charges of crimes against humanity for Israel's Sharon; protests in England against the Star Wars project. From China Radio International- Peru wants to extradite Fujimori from Japan; French President Shirac condemns the US for negative attitude about the Kyoto Protocols; China denies accusations that they illegally remove and sell body parts from prisoners they execute. From Spanish National Radio- the Helms-Burton anti-Cuba laws are still in effect and many European countries continue to break them; brief important stories from Nigeria, S. Africa, and Uganda; an update on prison riots in Columbia. From Radio Havana Cuba- Columbia declares a state of emergency in all its prisons; the former British ambassador to Columbia says the war on drugs can't be won and is counterproductive. All this plus times and frequencies for listening globally at home. Also a few notes on the reception of the BBC in N. America (you can still get it 20 hours a day) and a website for protesting the BBC's cessation of transmitting specifically to N America. Shortwave is not going away and offers insights to the global situation that are unattainable in any one country's media. I hope you'll consider airing the Shortwave Report if you aren't already. The next show will be up by 9am PDST on Friday July 13. link to this edition- http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/swr_7_6_01.mp3 ¡FurthuR! Dan Roberts
