LEXINGTON KY -- On August 4 2003 Alltel workers from CWA Locals 3371 and 3372 had been on strke almost two months. On a hot august day several women workers held the picket line in downtown Lexington with a sign denouncing the scab contractors alltel has used to replace them. Striking workers have also been struck six times by scab-driven cars and trucks, resulting in one arrest for hit-and-run.
ALLTEL took over plant and business (telephone) service from Verizon in Kentucky in 2002. Despite agreeing to abide by the Verizon labor contract, Alltel has attemped to break the union by contracting to outside workers while forcing higher health care costs and cuts to 401(k) plan contributions to their union workers.
While Verizon workers and community members in the northeast prepare to battle their phone giant, in Kentucky workers are standing up to Alltel with strong community support.
