UPE FILES INJUNCTION OVER UNIVERSITY PAY DATE CHANGE
The Union of Professional Employees will be filing an injunction asking the court to prohibit the University of Illinois from implementing a pay date change that will result in the loss of five days pay for several thousand University academic employees. The University announced it will change the academic pay date from the 21st to the 16th of each month beginning in September. The September checks will be missing five days pay. "We have no problem with the date change, only with losing 5 days pay. We have met with the University Administration and urged them to find some way to implement the date change without cutting our paychecks." said Al Kagan UPE President. " We had hoped to find some accommodation. We really don't want to go to court on this, but the University Administration leaves us no choice." The change impacts a large number of academic professionals, faculty on 12 months contracts, and faculty on nine months contracts with grants paying three months of summer salary. "We just want our normal paychecks," Kagan said. "This is not a revolutionary concept."
UPE's case will be filed as a joint action suit in the Illinois Court of Claims in Chicago on Thursday, July 17th. UPE is represented by Gilbert Cornfield of the Cornfield and Feldman law firm in Chicago.
A PRESS CONFERENCE on this legal action and the pay date change and its implications will be held Thursday, July 17th at 10:00 A.M. in room 314B, Illini Union.
The Union of Professional Employees is a union representing faculty and academic employees at the Urbana campus.

Would seem to be a no-brainer...the university contracts with its academic employees for a yearly salary, payable in 12 equal installments. They are clearly violating that agreement.
Good luck UPE!
