Pressure Point: International Day of Action Against ExxonMobil......July 11!! Current rating: 0
28 Jun 2001
In Seattle, as well as 18 countries, and 100 locations around the United States, we are telling ExxonMobil that corporate arrogance must stop! On July 11, at 7 a.m., in Seattle, we will be telling the corporate world we have had enough! No more drilling, no more killing, no more influence over our energy policies!
PressurePoint International Day of Action Update, June 27, 2001

JULY 11, 2001: THE WORLD VS EXXONMOBIL

July 11 is the International Day of Action, when people worldwide will be exposing ExxonMobil\'s destructive practices and putting pressure on them to change this. To date, we\'re aware of over 100 actions in over 15 countries.

This is massive! For years, ExxonMobil has destroyed the environment, violated human rights, exercised its control over the government, funded climate change skeptics, polluted pristine wildernesses, and generally killed on all levels. We\'re working with people like you who are fed up with the arrogance of this monolithic, immoral corporation, as well as people who are directly affected by ExxonMobil\'s intrusion into their communities and are preparing to rise up against it. ExxonMobil is now the 8th largest economy in the world, and the world\'s biggest corporation and highest profile oil company. It is without a doubt the principal driving force behind corporate support for globalization. We have to let the biggest of big businesses know that we will no longer tolerate its harmful policies.

In the two months PressurePoint has been in existence, we have worked to send a clear message that climate change is a critical issue and that ExxonMobil and Bush can no longer afford to stand in the way of worldwide efforts to curb global warming. Leading up to the April Quebec FTAA meeting, we helped organize a teach-in, and on the first day of the meeting dropped a 40 by 60 foot anti-FTAA banner in Seattle. On May 30, we went to Texas to join hundreds of others protesting at the ExxonMobil annual general shareholder meeting, and dropped a banner reading \"ExxonMobil: Stop Killing for Oil\" inside the meeting. We are coordinating actions all across North America and the world for July 11. A week later, we will be in Bonn, Germany for the continuation of the Kyoto climate change talks. Bush crushed worldwide hopes for curbing global warming when he rejected the Kyoto Protocol, although it has been proven over and over that human activity is contributing to climate change. The stage will then be set for the fall push on the World Bank and ExxonMobil for their funding of destructive fossil fuel projects, such as the Chad and Cameroon oil pipeline. We have built links with campus activists to run a coordinated fossil fuel divestment campaign in the fall.

We have heard from people all over the world who are concerned about ExxonMobil at this urgent time, and are every day encouraged and inspired. We want to remind you that, on this day of action and in the days ahead, that you are part of a growing movement against the oil industry. We have been building up a network of supporters of this movement, and the alliance grows day by day. We are committed to building a grass roots network of activists to address issues of climate change and corporate power. We are all working for a just and equitable society, and as we move towards that goal, we look to support from people like you who will help us with our work to address the alarming imbalance of corporate power and join us in our work for justice.

Keep up the great work with planning for the International Day of Action, and look over our newly updated website for:

-breaking news and campaign updates

-activist resources

-a list of organizations who have joined our campaign

-locations of all planned actions

You can also subscribe to stopexxoninfo (at) yahoogroups.com to stay updated on the worldwide campaign against ExxonMobil.

If you aren\'t coordinating or taking part in an action on July 11, you can make your voice heard by calling and writing ExxonMobil\'s CEO and telling him how you feel:

Mr Lee R. Raymond
Chairman and CEO
ExxonMobil Corporation
5959 Las Colinas Blvd.
Irving, TX 75039
(972)444-1000

We would love to hear how things are going, what resources you need, if you need to be connected with others in your area, etc. After the action, we would also love to compile anecdotes and media clips so we\'ll have an idea of the huge picture we\'re a part of. Please give us a call or email with reports, feedback, and more ideas on how to make July 11 a lasting message to our communities and a heads-up to ExxonMobil that together, united, we\'ll never be divided!
