The SHORTWAVE REPORT 5/23/03 ˇListen Globally! Current rating: 0
23 May 2003
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.5MB) and quick download (3.3MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. Spain, Netherlands, China, Russia, and Cuba
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (May 23) is up at the websitehttp://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality 13.5MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (29:35) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better- http://www.freakradio.org Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) now streams this program on Friday at 9:30am (PDST)
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.rinku.zaq.ne.jp/bkaec205/
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio
This week's show features stories from Spanish National Radio, Radio Netherlands, the Voice Of Russia, China Radio International, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Spain- Farmers from Iowa have signed a contract with Cuba to deliver food, and the US backed condemnation of Cuba for human rights violations was withdrawn at a meeting of the Organization of American States. New wars, of the so-called “anti-terrorism” variety, got underway in both the Phillipines and Indonesia. The UN International Atomic Energy Agency appealed to the US again to allow weapons inspectors back into Iraq. On Monday Columbia’s army stepped up its offensive against FARC rebels, while human rights groups say current army actions are not reducing violence. 100 elite Columbian army troops were on the run Wednesday after stealing at least $14 million stashed in the jungle by FARC rebels.
From Netherlands- The leaders of the Free Aceh movement, under attack in Indonesia, stand by their right to fight for independence of their oil-rich province. Dozens of Dutch writers and journalists demonstrated against the recent Cuban crackdown on dissidents. In Afghanistan US troops accidently killed 4 Afghan soldiers. In the run up to the new UN resolution on Iraq, there was considerable controversy and compromise.
From Russia- The US and England plan an autonomous region for Kurds in Northern Iraq. Then a commentary on the US media focus shifting from the never-found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, to the recently dug up graves- while the media is forgetting to point out that the US encouraged those massacres. Malaysia is buying 18 Russian fighter bombers.
From China- China strongly objects to the US interfering with the Tibet issue. Then a Press Review from Wednesday, covering the first 100 days of the SARS epidemic in China, and Arab media wanting a more objective view of the history of conflicts in the region.
From Cuba- a Viewpoint from RHC- On Tuesday Bush met with 11 people of Cuban origin, 3 of whom Cuba says are known terrorists protected by the US.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!

-- Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing than we know about living. We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount.
