AFSCME 698 Informational Picket! Thursday, June 1st, 12 Noon UIUC Main Quad Current rating: 0
30 May 2006
THURSDAY, JUNE 1st
12 NOON on the UIUC Main Quad
LOUD AND PROUD. RAIN OR SHINE.
Please join us in solidarity!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The University of Illinois administration is trying ONCE AGAIN to saddle its employees with an UNFAIR CONTRACT!

AFSCME 698, representing about 400 civil service and paraprofessional workers on the UIUC campus, has been deadlocked in negotiations with the U of I for over 10 months now. The University has been stonewalling our bargaining unit, hoping we'll swallow a contract which is regressive by any comparison.

PLEASE JOIN AFSCME 698 in solidarity at 12 Noon on the UIUC Main Quad on Thursday, June 1st, as we present an INFORMATIONAL PICKET. Our bargaining team will lay out all the details of what the University calls its "best and final" offer--an offer we call an INSULT to the value of our work.

We'll be hitting the Quad LOUD AND PROUD, RAIN OR SHINE, and we hope to see our fellow AFSCME members, fellow union members, family, friends, sympathetic students and faculty, and concerned citizens there in support.

We want there to be GOOD JOBS in Champaign-Urbana for years to come, and we need your help to hold the line!

IN SOLIDARITY--
Paul Kotheimer
Rank & file member, AFSCME 698

For those that might not be familiar with the acronym, AFSCME is the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
AFSCME 698 is the union that represents all lab techs, machine shop workers, agricultural workers, nurses, electricians and a host of other workers on campus. The purpose of AFSCME 698 is to negotiate a contract and defend that contract for these workers, just as GEO does for TAs and GAs on campus.

The UI has offered them a 2% year one...with year two and three at 1.5% LESS than the rate the UI gives to other employees in those years!

The UI says that is their best and last offer! Come to the quad today, and let the University know this is unacceptable!

See you there!

Thanks to all those friendly faces and loud voices we saw and heard on the quad today! Thanks especially to Jobs with Justice for bringing it, and also to the folks at the GEO for their show of solidarity! We'll get a fair contract with community support like we had today!

...Watch this newswire for more updates on the AFSCME 698 situation.
