conference.
Dear Prison Activist or Prisoner Rights Supporter:
On April 1st and 2nd , the American Friends Service Committee held a founding conference for the National Control Unit Campaign. This new group is a national coalition of prison and community activists, church and civil rights groups, Black Liberation and Puerto Rican organizations, campaigns for political prisoners/POW’s, civil libertarians, immigrant rights organizers, as well as the family members of prisoners. In fact, we want to include anyone who is opposed to torture, government terrorism, violation of democratic rights and political repression in this movement.
Although the major part of the campaign will deal with control unit prisoners, we will oppose use of prisons as the solution to social problems, the massive confinement of Black and Brown youth, serious violations of human rights in immigration detention and youth facilities, the rise of private prisons, use of torture and repressive interrogation by police, and militarized policing-- all of which has brought forward the modern control unit as just one instrument in a fascist-style program. We must fight back!
On May 20, we will have the first of three sit-down strategy sessions for prison activists and interested persons to come up with a plan for the July 22, 2006 conference here in Chicago (location yet to set ). Our objectives are to unite all prison activists, family members and friends of prisoners, and others in the community opposed to repressive imprisonment as an answer to today’s social problems. We can use your ideas, energy, and drive to make this happen. We know that many of you are already working around these issues and we respect that, but a national campaign with more resources, contacts, and volunteers can only help every organization that is part of this coalition. A Chicago Area/Midwest Coalition Against Control Unit Prisons would not only deal with Control Unit issues, but government repression generally, the racism hidden behind these policies, and the suppression of the poor. Now we can finally speak out with an even louder voice, and organize a massive opposition which can shut them down! Unity is the key, so let’s get active in Chicago, and bring organizers from Indiana, Wisconsin, and parts of Michigan into the fold also.
