This meeting is for Registered Student organizations at the University of Illinois. However, given the overlap and solidarity between campus and city in our community, I'm pretty certain they would not mind anyone who helps make connections into the community itself. |

There was a great victory in the Senate yesterday, Monday,
March 27th. The Senate Judiciary Committee came to a
compromise and passed a legislation that includes the
provisions that we have been fighting for, such as:
** A path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented
immigrants in the country who meet a few general requirements.
** Temporary guestworker program for roughly 400,000
immigrants per year.
** DREAM Act, legalization for undocumented students who also
meet a certain criteria.
This is definitely a step forward, but it is not a full
victory. We have to ensure that it moves forward for a general
vote on the Senate floor and passes. Then it must still be
passed in the House. We have to also make sure that a HR 4437
legislation, a bill that would only be about border
enforcement and the criminalization of undocumented
immigrants, is not introduced into the Senate by the majority
leader, Bill Frist.
Please come out to this planning meeting on Thursday, March
30th, and help us plan a march and a rally on this day of
action. We need to get organized in order to persuade
Congressman Tim Johnson to support this new legislation and
regret his vote in favor of HR 4437. We need to put our
efforts together at this critical point in order to get more
attention on the need for fair and comprehensive immigration
reform.
Please contact Diana Mora at 773.727.2580, mora (at) uiuc.edu if
you have any questions.
Hope to see you all there!
