The following is a list of workshop descriptions:
Understanding Prevention and Conception:
A discussion on hormonal and non hormonal birth control and self examination. This workshop will focus on several different issues in regards to conventional and non-conventional methods of birth control, i.e. hormonal and non-hormonal. A large portion of the workshop will focus on the importance of practicing fertility awareness for women already on birth control or considering it. We will also discuss methods of self examination. The scope of conversation will be discussion based and open to all people.
Women’s Wellness Discussion:
When checking in on the first day of the conference, be sure to pick up the zine that accompanies this discussion. The zine will reference potential topics for discussion. The zine will include information on how to talk to doctors, how to look for affordable health care, discussion on diet and exercise, depression and other miscellaneous health related topics. If any woman wants to talk about, present or discuss a specific topic, let us know by e-mailing KirksvilleHealth (at) hotmail.com. Otherwise, any outside information is welcome.
Self-Defense for Women:
You can defend yourself! Join this three hour workshop for comprehensive women’s self-defense. Attendees will learn how to use assertiveness, body language and their mental and physical advantages to prevent and survive a range of experiences, from social pressure to inappropriate intimate behavior to sexual assault. The workshop will also include a discussion of the myths and facts of violence against women and sharing of the tools we all use to protect ourselves. Anyone who identifies as female is welcome to attend. Limited to 24 women – sign up at the welcome center.
Wild Edibles / Hike:
After an introduction to edible plants that can be found locally growing in the wild, join us for a guided springtime hike through Adair County’s public lands! Look for birds, bobcats, wild edibles, and love among the elms and oaks. We’ll continue our discussion on wild edibles and talk about some of Northeast Missouri’s ecological concerns.
Mental Illness, Pharmaceuticals, and Community:
Mental illness in whatever form affects people of every age, sex, race, and class and is the leading cause of disability in North America and Europe. In addition to the dehabilitating effects on their thinking, feeling, moods, and ability to relate to others, those who suffer from mental illness are also faced with an incredible stigma, a belief that mental illnesses are a result of personal weakness, lack of character, or poor upbringing and that they can be overcome through “willpower” alone.
This discussion will seek to dispel some of the false ideas surrounding mental illness and explore ways to combat the stigma attached to it. Topics of discussion will include, but not be limited to the possible origins of this stigma, the role pharmaceuticals play in treating mental illness, why the use of pharmaceuticals is looked down upon by many, and the responsibilities of our communities in supporting those coping with mental illness.
Non-coercive Communication and Group Dynamics:
This workshop will consist of a short discussion of various principles of non-coercive communication followed by a role-play. The scenario will provide several obstacles that will require the group to discuss and come to a decision. At the end of the scenario, we will analyze the group’s dynamics and discuss ways to improve our communication.
Dealing with Depression:
This will be a discussion covering the effects of depression in its varying forms on both the individual and the community. Potential topics include: Types of depression, healing processes, supportive roles, and avoiding isolation.
Childcare in Radical Spaces:
It will be the goal of this workshop to express our concerns and desires for healthy childcare in radical spaces. Specifically, we will attempt to create a loose, non-authoritarian model for childcare that can be shared with others for future gatherings and convergences.
Brew it Yourself:
This workshop will combine the hands-on experience of boiling a wort with a discussion of the entire beer brewing process, and a variety of other brewing techniques. Participants are invited to share their own knowledge, experience, and some of the beers we’ve made.
Empowering Ourselves and Each Other:
A presentation and conversation on consent, communication, sexual assault, interpersonal violence, and personal/group accountability in our communities. The presentation will last around 45 minutes, the rest to be questions, answers, and discussion. People of all genders are encouraged to attend. We intend for this to be a safe space.
Masculine Identity and Health:
What is masculine identity? In what ways does masculinity as it exists in society impact personal identity and the communities in which we live? Can /should masculinity be reconstructed in a manner that is healthier for both the individual and the community. This will be a theoretical discussion about a potentially sensitive and personal topic. It is open to anyone interested in discussing the construct of masculinity in a respectful manner. |
