YWCA's National Day to Eliminate Racism
Panel Discussion on Race and Diversity
On Saturday April 26, 2003, the YWCA is celebrating their National Day to Eliminate Racism. Since 1994, The YWCA nationally has been engaged in promoting community dialogues on issues of race. The YWCA at the University of Illinois and the University YMCA is holding a panel discussion on race and diversity in honor of the day. The discussion will take place on Saturday April 26th beginning at 1 pm to at Latzer Hall in the YMCA building (1001 S. Wright St) on the University of Illinois campus.
There will be several community members and University of Illinois professors participating on the panel, discussing their topic of research in the area of race and diversity. The discussion topics range from race and urban politics to race diversity and equity in local schools. Speakers for the panel include Cope Cumpston, newly elected member to the Urbana School Board, Professor Todd Shaw from the Political Science Department at the University of Illinois, and Professor Helen Neville from the Education Psychology/Afro-American Studies and Research Program at the University of Illinois. Following the panelists' presentations there will be a question and answer session with the audience members and the other panelists.
We are asking the community for support of the National Day to Eliminate Racism by considering making a monetary contribution to YWCA Racial Justice Programs and attending the panel discussion. In return for their contribution their name will appear in our program booklet as a supporter of YWCA Racial Justice Programs that are aimed at eliminating racism in our community.
This event is a great opportunity for all community members to come together to discuss issues of race and diversity that affect their lives. The YWCA and the YMCA invite all community members to take part in the event on Saturday April 26 at 1 pm.
