BioETHICS 2006 and GEAN Expo:
Two important events you should know about.
1) BioETHICS 2006 April 8th - 12th Chicago
2) Genetic Engineering Action Network (GEAN) Expo: 11am - 3pm; Sunday, January 22; DePaul University, Chicago (Schmitt Academic Center; 2320 N. Kenmore Ave)
The Biotech Industry Organization (BIO) is coming to Chicago this April for their annual convention, schmooze-fest and PR extravaganza - BIO 2006.
In response, farmers, eaters, parents, anti-corporate activists, health care and peace and justice activists are organizing BioETHICS 2006, which will take place over five days from April 8th - 12th. We are planning a teach-in with skillshares, workshops and panels on the issues. There will be good music, street theatre, puppets and a parade, and we need your help to make it happen!
What we're against: Unlabeled, untested genetically engineered food and crops, corporate control of seed supplies and manipulation of small farmers, patenting life, the diabetes and obesity epidemics caused by highly processed genetically engineered foods, the new push for biological weapons development by the US government, price-fixing pharmaceutical corporations that talk about futuristic cures while creating, maintaining and profiting from our insufficient and unequal healthcare system.
What we're for: Sustainable and organic agriculture, local food systems and food security, access to quality affordable food, good healthcare for all, biodiversity, community gardens, public education about food and health, and peace with justice.
The Genetic Engineering Action Network (GEAN) is organizing a public education expo on these issues in preparation for BioETHICS. This is a chance to find out what's going on with biotech, how it affects you and what we can do about it. Where and when: DePaul University; Schmitt Academic Center; 2320 N. Kenmore Ave, Chicago. Sunday January 22, 11 am-3pm.
BioETHICS 2006 is a grassroots, open and democratic effort. Please email bioethics2006 (at) yahoo.com for information about meetings or other ways to help!
