Officer Myers court appearance Current rating: 0
03 Dec 2005
Officer Myers, accused of illegally tasing an inmate, is in court this Tuesday.
Hello all.
I'm putting out the call for people to show up this Tuesday, Dec 6, at 3:15 for the court appearance of Officer Myers, accused of illegally using a taser on an inmate.
It's at the Champaign County Courthouse, downtown Urbana.
Without public pressure, these kinds of cases are quickly dropped.
Spread the word.
Hope to see you there.

Peace, BD

I don't know the details of the incident but considering that I have been incarcerated on many occasions in several county jails along with serving several years in a state prison, I can assure you that normally when an inmate is injured by the guards it is because the inmate instigated the incident. Jails and prisons are a volatile place to live. Treating the guards with respect generally will make life more tolerable. Also, you might want to review online mugshot photos at websites such as http://www.mcso.org/submenu.asp?file=MugIndex . You will notice that many of the inmates have cuts and bruises. These injuries are the risk the criminal takes when he/she breaks the law. My advice to anybody going to prison is to go along with the program. Otherwise, if you fight the system you simply will end up in a maximum or super-maximum unit which will not be fun.

I agree, AKA. I know several inmates, and I know that they are not always innocent in these incidents. I have a lot of respect for the difficulties and tough situations faced by the correctional officers. I think that we need to hear both sides before we can draw any conclusions.

Officer Myers waived the preliminary hearing and pleaded "not guilty."
He has another court date of January 25, 2005 at 11:30 a.m.j
Thanks to everybody who came out.

As for details, it's been in the NG several times.

Jail officer charged with using Taser on inmate

http://www.news-gazette.com/localnews/story.cfm?Number=19353

His fellow officers turned him in after he lied to his supervisor about the incident, hence the obstruction of justice charge in addition to the aggravated battery charge.

Enough of this crap. I have personal knowledge of the abuse suffered as a result of Meyer's tactics. I can assure you he is most definately NOT innocent and deserves the maximum penalty allowed under law.

Don't miss the article on Wednesday in the News-Gazette.
Apparently Champaign County has released Ray Hsieh, the inmate tased by Myers, and paid him somewhere between $1 and $10,000 for his troubles. Hsieh is a homeless man from Chicago who, it looks, was living out of stolen cars.
Surely this is hush money to to keep this all quiet.
This is money that should go to housing the homeless, not zapping them with Tasers.
One more reason we need to keep the pressure on to ensure that Myers is prosecuted.
