Annual Peace Bazaar Celebrates 35 Years of Support for Peace and Social Justice |
The 35th annual Peace Bazaar will be held Saturday, December 3rd at Community United Church of Christ (corner of 6th and Daniel) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Everyone is invited to come shopping at this fun event!
The Peace Bazaar is an annual (35th year!) alternative gift fair where we sell donated items to raise funds for peace and social justice groups. Over the past 34 years, it’s estimated the Peace Bazaar has raised between $60, 000 and $65, 000 for peace and social justice groups. Last year, in 2004, we raised $3650 and donated $365 to ten peace and social justice groups.
Most of this money is raised from the sale of recycled items (although we do sell many new items as well). People donate things they no longer wish to own that are suitable for gifts or still useable. We then sell those items to other people. We always have a wide variety of items available for sale including new and recycled gifts, UNICEF cards and calendars, works by local artists, antiques and collectibles, books, plants, toys, furniture, fresh-baked goods, and much, much more! For a heads-up on some of the more special items available this year, check our new website at http://www.peacebazaar.org/ and click on the “sneak peek” section.
Everyone is invited to come shopping at this fun event. The sale starts at 9 a.m. Come early for the best selection. Half-price sale starts at 1 p.m.
Free parking is available in the church lot behind the building in both “rental” and “church” spots. There is also free parking in two nearby UI parking garages. Community United Church is the blonde brick church at 6th and Daniel in Champaign.
All proceeds from the Peace Bazaar are donated to groups promoting peace and social justice. This year 12 groups will be receiving bazaar proceeds. The local recipients include the Center for Women in Transition, CU Citizens for Peace and Justice, Frances Nelson Healthcare Center, TIMES (Transitional Initiatives and Men’s Emergency Services) and a speakers series by AWARE Presents. National and international groups receiving Peace Bazaar proceeds include the Center for Development in Central America, Doctors Without Borders, Human Rights Watch, Islamic Relief, Right Sharing of World Resources, Project Lakota (Pine Ridge Reservation, S. Dakota) and the Somali Relief Fund. Summaries of the work that these groups do are listed on our website at http://www.peacebazaar.org/recipients.htm .
Shop the 35th annual Peace Bazaar on December 3rd for great bargains, wonderful treasures, and the support of peace and social justice!
