The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center's facility at 218 West Main St., Suite 110, is now accessible by those using wheels to get around. |
We now have available a ramp that can be placed to overcome the obstacle that our 3 inch front step by our outside door created for some. Tap on the front window or otherwise notify us (by phone or e-mail) that you need the ramp and the staff person on duty will deploy the ramp for you.
The ramp can be found stored inside the front door. It is relatively light and provides access as needed. It should then be stored again inside the front door when access is no longer immediately needed. It should be noted that the ramp should NOT be dropped on it's lip, as this is the area most vulnerable to damage. This part is constructed of hardwood to resist damage, but it is still important to PLACE the ramp into position, DO NOT DROP IT, for longest working life.
The inside edge of the production room door threshold also presented a problem, but we have installed a small, permanent ramp to overcome this obstacle, so that the facilities of the production room are available to all.
I believe that we should post a small notice about this in the front window, perhaps with the universal "person in chair on blue background."
These improvements are a temporary solution pending future plans of our landlord to rebuild the entire building that the U-C IMC is housed in, at which point all facilities will be brought up to the most modern standard, per code.
Any comments about these changes and other ways to improve the accessibility of the U-C IMC facility, that we are commited to maintaining and improving, should be brought to the attention of either the Space or Steering working groups. |
