Jello Biafra speaks on Free Speech, Censorship, and Democracy in America
When: 7-9 PM Wednesday, March 19th, 2003
Where: Foellinger Auditorium at the University of Illinois
What: Renown social commentator Jello Biafra will give a spoken word performance at U of I. Jello Biafra was the first musician to be put on trial for a record’s content. His performances cross boundaries of poetry, comedy, commentary, and theatre, and his appearance at U of I celebrates the upcoming release of a new spoken word album. Biafra’s accomplishments include: Former lead singer of the seminal punk band Dead Kennedys, 2000 Green Party Presidential nominee, founder of record label Alternative Tentacles, author of numerous spoken word albums, former mayoral candidate of San Francisco, and lead singer of the band Lard.
Who: This event is free and open to the public. The Student American Civil Liberties Union at UIUC are sponsoring the event with co-sponsorship from Amnesty International Chapter #124, Campus Greens, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Feminist Majority, Student Peace Action, Students for a Democratic Society, the U of I Law School ACLU, the Unaffiliated Illini, Unit One/Allen Hall, and YWCA.
