Last night, close to 100 people from the Champaign-Urbana area joined members of AWARE for a overnight bus trip to Washington, D.C. where they will meet up with thousands of other Americans to protest the Iraq War. The two charter buses filled up quickly with people eager to represent their anti-war views by participating in the massive demonstration and march this weekend in the capital. The UCIMC will be providing home support and assistance for the Champaign-Urbana contingent.
We will be providing updates on the march and interviews from those in attendance as they report in to our location in Urbana. |

Morning Update-
Both buses from the Champaign-Urbana area arrived safely in D.C. early this morning.
UCIMC member and activist Randall Cotton called in to report that the National Lawyers’ Guild (NLG) was in attendance to monitor the protest and provide legal assistance throughout the day. Members are easily identifiable on the street by their neon green baseball hats. Randall reports that the NLG plans to monitor the march with over 50 volunteers dispersed in the crowds. They are also providing local telephone support for those out-of-state protesters. The local (Washington D.C.) telephone number for legal assistance is (202) 265-5965.
The National Lawyers Guild has played an important role in protests and demonstrations over the past couple of years as there has been increasing police and military presence at such events, along with a startling number of false arrests and detentions The NLG has provided essential legal support for these cases and fought against the erosion of our civil rights in the process. |
