Organizers counted 120 activists holding signs and "shivering for peace" this afternoon, at the weekly Prospect for Peace observance north of I-74 in Champaign. The observance, at Prospect and Marketview Streets, has been a weekly event for almost a year. More than 80 people attended last week and the week before. Today's demonstrators included parents with children, high school and college students, senior citizens, and even a dog. Despite temperatures in the 30s and a chilly wind, participants were cheered by favorable responses from the vast majority of motorists traversing the city's busiest intersection. |

Despite temperatures in the 30s and a chilly wind, participants were cheered by favorable responses from the vast majority of motorists traversing the city's busiest intersection.
Two-finger peace signs, smiles, waves and honking horns outnumbered one-finger salutes and taunts by at least 25 to one, and many of the drivers and passengers accepted flyers from the demonstrators. The event continues each Saturday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Prospect for Peace is sponsored by the local pro-peace group AWARE, which also holds a public meeting every Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Independent Media Center, 218 W. Main St., Urbana. More information is available at the group's website: www.anti-war.net. |

Every Sunday 1pm-3pm, all time zones, people are hitting the freeway exits with signs, banners, and puppets, covering every highway exit, lining up the highway with messages of peace. Spread the virus! |

Hello Urbana.... Because you are my hometown (Urbana H.S. class of 1968) I am delighted see everyone is turning out for these important antiwar events. I now live in suburban New York City (Rockland County) and our local vigil is also experiencing a surge in participation. We had nearly 60 participants last Saturday. Keep up the good work. --Peter T. |
