UI Contractor Has Discrimination History Current rating: 0
02 Oct 2002
The contractor hired to replace the DKH roof on the UI campus is not only not paying its workers a prevailing wage; it's also the subject of a disability discrimination suit brought by the EEOC.
Yesterday, the Rockford Register-Star reported in its business section that Renaissance Rooferswas the subject of a discrimination suit filed by the EEOC in U.S. District Court ["Belvidere Roofing Company Bias Case a First for Area," Rockford Register-Star, 1 Oct 02, p1B]. The suit charges that Renaissance discriminated against a mildly retarded worker by harassing, humiliating, unneccesarily transferring, and finally firing him after he worked competantly for the company for a year.

(The Register-Star further underscored the seriousness of the suit by reporting that last year, the EEOC found only ~15% of disability discrimination claims to have reasonable cause enough to be pursued in court.)

This is the same roofing company which has won a UI contract to replace the roof on David Kinley Hall. DKH has been picketted by Sheetmetal 218 for several weeks, alleging that Renaissance does not pay its workers the prevailing wage. (See related stories, below.)
