Announcement :: UCIMC
New Website Software Current rating: 0
06 Sep 2002
The software running the UCIMC website has been changed. You will notice various changes, improvements, and probably bugs. But please stick with us, and hopefully the transition will provide us with a more stable and versatile web presence!
The new sofware, called dadaIMC, is very cleanly designed, and should be much easier for the UCIMC tech team to update over the long term.
Most things should be very similar to life under the old software...but if you have problems, please report them to the tech team.

The new software is dope.

It let's people participate online in ways that simply weren't possible before.

Log In and edit your own stories, along with rating the stories that are on the Newswire.

Dada opens up new possibilities for citizen journalists. Even the mp3 problem is supposed to be solved, so that it's easy to upload audio.

Remember to report bugs that you encounter, as Clint asked, so that we can make this an even better website than it has been before.
Comment On "dada"

Am I the only one, then, who can't figure a bunch of stuff out? Like how to rate articles or comments, and how to navigate around the web site using lynx. I just tried to rate an article using Internet Explorer whatever exactly "rating" means anyway), failed to figure out how to do it the first time around, and then was told when I went back to try again, "Shame on you for trying to stuff the ballot box!" Ridiculous.

It's still a busy busy web site, and of course I as a non-techie don't understand what the advantages of "dada" are in the first place, particularly now that he no longer supports me financially or plays catch with me. :) But maybe I'll get it all figured out in a few months of groping around.

OK, now someone rate my comment. :)

Ok, I fixed the bug(s) that caused ratings of comments to features (of which this is one) to fail. Well, actually, the rating would succeed, and then it would act like it failed. Anyway, it's fixed.
Very Nice...

This looks very nice, and from my limited understanding, should be much nicer for the techies. One question... could we change the colors for the titles on the newswire? It's almost impossible to see what they are.

Mixed Feelings On Newswire Titles

My first impression of the Newswire titles was the same as Michael Feltes'. But I've since changed my mind.

When the network spammers show up, I hope that they don't notice the difference myself. That's why I like the subtle color that tends to not make apparent the divided nature of the Newswires.

Sascha had to ask me where the button was to make a story appear on the Local Newswire (it is a box that you check on the Publish form that asks, "Is this story of local interest?"). I think it is better that way than it would be if it were more prominant. It makes it harder to abuse this way.

Those who are locals, who necessarily post most local news, will quickly figure this out, but many spammers won't. I had to move a story today off the Local Newswire that clearly wasn't local news, so the system isn't perfect, but it's a darn sight better than it would otherwise be.

Conversely, both Sascha and I have already moved stories up to the Local Newswire that deserved to really be there. I would rather have the it set-up this way, than in a way which tends to encourage and simpilfy the situation for the still too frequent abusers of the IMC network.

But these are just my opinions, however the reasons are as stated, which seem to me to be of significant concern, based on past problems we've had. I think that Dada is great and, even though it will take some learning, it is a vast improvement over Active in nearly every way.
Newswire Titles

I see where you're coming from, particularly given all the hard work you & others have put into defeating the spammers.
However, making the titles hard to see isn't just thwarting spammers, it's thwarting legitimate users as well -- which seems to be contrary to the nature of the IMC and not a good way to encourage newbies to come back. Depending on one's monitor, graphics capabilities, and the condition of one's eyes, those colors aren't just subtle; they're indistinguishable. I think that keeping them that way may inadvertently do more harm than good... and nothing ensures that the spammers won't eventually figure it out anyway.

Overall, though, I like the site! Would it be possible to make have the author's names show up in the newswire column as well? Or is this a bad idea?
