Illinois Congressmen Throw Coronation Ceremony in Senate Building for Cult Leader, Rev. Sun Myung Moon Current rating: 0
21 Jun 2004
According to an article posted today in Salon, " On March 23, the Dirksen Senate Office Building was the scene of a coronation ceremony for Rev. Sun Myung Moon, owner of the conservative Washington Times newspaper and UPI wire service, who was given a bejeweled crown by Rep. Danny K. Davis, D-Ill." Also present at the ceremony was Illinois own Dennis Hastert, who is currently the Speaker of the House.

News of the coronation ceremony was broken by the politics website, Politics1. Which has been following up with additional facts, triggering today's story in Salon, entitled "Hail to the Moon King."

Sun Myung Moon is the billionaire head of the "Unification Church" cult, and a convicted tax felon. After his Congressional coronoation ceremony, Moon proclaimed himself "humanity's Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent."

The 84 year-old Moon is a controversial figure, to say the least, and an arch far-right-winger who is the benefactor of conservative foundations like the American Family Coalition. In the 1980s we served time for tax fraud and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Moon preaches that gays are "dung-eating dogs," Jews brought on the Holocaust by betraying Jesus, and the U.S. Constitution should be scrapped in favor of a system he calls "Godism" -- with him in charge.

Moon is also the publisher behind the right-wing mouthpiece "newspaper" the Washington Times, which, according to Salon, was the only news organization to cover the coronation ceremony before the story recently broke on the Internet.

The Chicago Tribune is the only mainstream newspaper to pick up the story, in a column by Eric Zorn. Zorn spoke to an unapologetic Rep. Davis, and concluded that:

"[T]he most disturbing thing is that, to this day, Davis expresses no regret about assisting in the pageantry designed to burnish and inflate the reputation of a man who, divine or not, wants to abolish Western-style democracy, compares gay people to dung-eating dogs, and in exhorting Jews to convert and follow him, told them: 'You have to repent. Jesus was the King of Israel. Through the principle of indemnity, Hitler killed 6 million Jews.'"

The big question is, what are two of our electred representatives doing crowning a convicted felon and cult leader as "humanity's Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent."

Do Rep. Hastert and Rep. Davis support and share Moon's belief that "he would save everyone on Earth as he had saved the souls of Hitler and Stalin, as Moon told the gathered Congressmen at the coronation ceremony?

And what about the tax dollars spent on the ceremony and the fancy crown?

It's time to ask Denny Hastert and Danny Davis if they're with Moon when he says that "here will be a purge on God’s orders ... Gays will be eliminated ... It will be greater than the communist purge, but at God’s orders."

Call their offices, send them letters and e-mails:

Dear Muck,

Are you saying that Moon does not have the right in this country to publish his paper? Now, I am know fan of Moon, but I do think his right to free speech is as protected as yours or mine. Anyway, don't you think in the interest of fairness that some balance needs to provided against the Washington Post? This left wing paper has been the only game in town for many years and the competition will make it better, right?

Anyway you probably feel about the Reverand Moon as I do about the Reverand Jackson (Jesse). Blowhards who use their religion as a prop deserve no respect from either the right (as in correct) or the left (as in wrong).

As Always,

Jack

JR,

There's nothing in Muck Raker's article that questions the Rev. Moon's right to express his opinions. Instead, the appropriateness of the behavior of the congressmen is being questioned in regards to their participation in a coronation ceremony that crowned Rev. Moon in a government building. Because Rev. Moon is an obvious religious fanatic with controversial opinions and anti-democratic leanings, there is some cause for concern.

As for the Washington Post, this is a mainstream corporate-controlled newspaper; it is NOT a leftist publication.

Furthermore, your post contains a logical contradiction: you imply that members of the right are always correct, and yet you condemn the Rev. Moon as a "blowhard" who deserves no respect. However, the Rev. Moon IS a member of the right, therefore by your own reasoning his opinions, no matter how ridiculous, must be correct.

JACK:

I am "KNOW " fan of Moon either!

I guess you cannot always be correct or should I say right?

Thanks for the laughs...again!

Dear No Fan,

Thanks so much for the lesson. As a wealthy Republican, I have a full staff of highly underpaid workers who normally do these kinds of things for me. I am sorry if my error offended you as I know how easily you folks actually get offended.

Mr. Hilty wrote:As for the Washington Post, this is a mainstream corporate-controlled newspaper; it is NOT a leftist publication.

Perhaps Mr. Hilty that after reading this publication you should refrain from rolling it up and smoking it. While it is not the communist world worker, The Washington Post rivals the New York Times in its leftist tilt. It is so biased, that it has allowed another paper to enter the market and successfully gain market share.

Anyway, the world knows this if you do not. Perhaps you have misunderstood because they have not called for the complete over throw of the current government. The only solution to end this bias is for conservatives to simply buy it. We just may.

Dear Jack,

Again, the Washington Post is not a leftist publication by any stretch of the imagination. Neither is the NY Times. Both newspapers are mainstream corporate conglomerates that can't tilt too far to the left , otherwise their corporate sponsors (the advertisers) would abandon them and they would quickly become bankrupt. The NY Times was one of the leading cheerleaders for the Iraq war .

There has not been a major leftist newspaper in the United States since about 1900. At that time, it was still possible to find socialist newspapers, communist newspapers, anarchist newspapers, and pro-labor newspapers with a broad circulation. Today, there is nothing that remotely resembles these publications.

And BTW:

1) My mouth isn't large enough to smoke a newspaper, but perhaps yours is.

2) It makes little difference what "most people" think: the truth isn't a popularity contest.

3) Rich people are usually moderately liberal and vote democratic. Therefore, it seems more likely that the Washington Times will be purchased by someone more liberal than the Rev. Moon.

4) The correct appellation is Dr. Hilty.

Hi,

It's funny to watch you folks waste your time arguing with somebody who's pretending to be Jack Ryan.

Does the UCIMC have a comedy hour? I'd like to see more of this!

Thanks,
and Happy Independence Day,
Tim
