Noted Media Studies and Mass Communication analyst and critic, University of Illinois Professor Robert McChesney, will speak on the politics of mass communication and media activism and sign his new book in a fundraiser for the Public i, UC IMC's monthly newspaper.
When? Sunday, May 16th, 3-5 p.m.
Where? IMC, 218 W. Main, Urbana |
A nationally-recognized media scholar and renowned advocate of grassroots media, Robert McChesney is Research Professor in the Institute of Communications Research at the University of Illinois. A local resident, he can be heard interviewing guests and taking calls on his live radio show, "Media Matters," every Sunday afternoon on WILL. As evidenced by hundreds of newspaper and journal articles, widespread presence on the Web, and his position as co-editor of the Monthly Review, McChesney's committment to public discussion makes him an invaluable local resource for, and national promoter of, a more democratic system of media.
McChesney's new book, The Problem of the Media: U.S. Communication Politics in the Twenty-First Century (2004), promises to be a landmark contribution to the field of Media Studies and Mass Communication. Moreover, it arms activists and explains to the public the current crisis of corporate-dominated mass media, analyzing the anti-democratic structures and policies fueling this crisis.
On Sunday, May 16th from 3-5 p.m., McChesney will give a lecture at the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center (218 W. Main, U. ), followed by a book signing. Guests may buy the book at the discounted price of $12 or pay a small fee upon admission to the lecture.
Thanks to Professor McChesney's generosity, proceeds will go to the Public I, a monthly publication of the Urbana-Champaign IMC. The Public I is run by a small group of volunteers who make all editorial decisions by consensus. We seek original articles from community members on issues of local, national, and international importance. |
This work is in the public domain. |
