Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman visits WEFT & IMC Current rating: 0
23 Apr 2004

Amy Goodman is the host of the syndicated daily news program, Democracy Now!, carried on over 200 community radio stations, public access TV and Free Speech TV. She stopped in Champaign on Friday afternoon for an interview on WEFT's mediageek radioshow, a visit to the IMC, and to give a benefit talk for WEFT.

Goodman is on tour in support of her new book, The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers and the Media That Love Them, and in support of the grassroots and community media that carry and support Democracy Now!

She appeared on WEFT's mediageek radio show where she talked about her start in journalism and joining the ranks at Pacifica station WBAI in New York City.

Just after the WEFT interview, Goodman gave an hour-long talk to a packed room of over 200 at the Illinois Disciples Foundation as a benefit for the community station. She discussed many topics covered in her book, including the current breakdown of dissent in the mainstream media and her appearance on the Sally Jesse Raphael television program during the first Gulf War, which only made it to air after a major audience outcry.

Following her talk, Goodman stayed for over an hour to sign books and meet the audience before leaving for Yellow Springs, Ohio, to give the commencement address at Antioch College the next morning.

Earlier in the day, Goodman visited the Urbana-Champaign IMC and met with a few IMC volunteers and toured the IMC space. In the photo, from left to right: Darrin Drda, Sandra Ahten, Paul Riismandel, Amy Goodman and Danielle Chynoweth.

Audio from the talk and WEFT interview will be posted here soon.

Hey Jack,

What's it like trying to fluff over your gay porn star past and also overcome the jinxed "Ryan" name in your campaign as Illinois Republican candidate for Senate?

Hey Muck,

What's it like trying to use the same joke over and over again? Perhaps some new material?
