Miami police have arrested at least five independent journalists including Democracy Now! producer Ana Nogueira while they were covering the protests surrounding the Free Trade Area of the Americas negotiators.
Sources at the Independent Media Center say at least three IMC reporters have been arrested: Jenny Lee and Mike Medow, both of Michigan Indymedia, as well as an IMC reporter who goes by the name of Winter. A television producer with the Madison, Wisc. station WYOU was also arrested.
The arrests occurred around 5 p.m. outside the Miami-Dade County Jail where dozens of protesters are being held.
The Miami Herald is reporting that television helicopter footage showed the arrests were made while the crowd was dispersing as ordered by the Miami police.
According to Democracy Now! Producer Jeremy Scahill, his efforts to alert the police that they had arrested a journalist were met with the reply, ?It doesn?t matter if she?s a journalist ? she shouldn?t have been there.?
