Attend an anti-"Chief Illiniwek" rally this Friday featuring Charlene Teters, founder of the anti-"Chief" movement. Speak out for an end to the racism of "Chief Illiniwek" and racism of celebrating Columbus Day. |

Dear friends,
Please join us for an anti-"Chief" rally this Friday featuring Charlene Teters!
---------------------------------
ANTI-"CHIEF" RALLY
featuring Charlene Teters
Friday, October 10th, 2003
12 noon at Henry Admin Bldg
West side, UIUC Quad, Urbana
---------------------------------
Support indigenous rights in our community by attending An Anti-"Chief" Rally this Friday instead of celebrating the legacy of genocide in the U.S. on Columbus Day.
There will be picketing outside of Henry Administration Building (home of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees) from 11:30am-2:00p.m. At 12 noon, there will be a rally featuring keynote speaker, Charlene Teters, founder of the anti-"Chief Illinikwek" movement.
Charlene Teters, a Spokane Indian, founded the anti-"Chief Illiniwek" movement in Champaign-Urbana in 1989. The history of Charlene's work is the subject of a nationally aired award winning documentary "In Whose Honor?" by Jay Rosenstein. When she left C-U, Charlene went on to challenge the inappropriate use of American Indian images and culture by schools, scholars, museums, corporations, sports teams, and media around the nation.
Come to the rally to voice your opposition to "Chief Illiniwek's" continued mockery of Native culture and to demand that the University of Illinois Board of Trustees eliminate the racist mascot and symbol!
This event is co-sponsored by: 85% Coalition, Activist Forum, African American Cultural Program, Anti-War, Anti-Racism Effort, Center for Democracy in a Multiracial Society, Common Ground Food Cooperative, Illinois Disciples Foundation, La Casa Cultural Latina, Progressive Resource/Action Cooperative, School for Designing a Society, Student Peace Action, Teachers for Peace and Justice, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, and

Being one-half INDIAN (native american is stupid) I do not find the Chief racist at all. Neither does the rest of my family. My mother who is indeed full-blooded Cherokee, wonders "what are you going to protest next, black coffee???"
