Photographs of the AWARE Float and Sign Marchers. |

For the Champaign County July 4th Parade, 2003, members of AWARE ran a float based on the theme of federal funding draining funds from education to pay for war. To illustrate this theme, the float features a tank aimed at a schoolhouse. Several other members of AWARE followed behind with creative signs--many variations on the same theme.

Nice pics, Ben. The AWARE float, featuring a tank taking aim at a schoolhouse, wasn't the only parade entry that drew double-takes from bystanders. Another was a gigantic tow truck with a little girl on the back shooting bystanders with a water gun, towing a military jeep with uniformed soldiers inside, and a banner across the vehicle's front that read "Owens Funeral Home Salutes the 92nd Airborne Division." Hard to believe that wasn't intentional irony. |

Just out of curiosity, how did people react to these floats? |

Actually, I was quite surprised with the AWARE float reception around me as I took photographs of it. There was a definite rise and fall of calm applause that coincided with the passing of the float. I didn't hear a single negative comment. Judging from these same people's reactions to other floats, they weren't shy in expressing their opinions.
However, my perspective was only from one point along the route...it would be great to hear from someone in the parade.

Although it was the last thing mentioned in the News-Gazette's parade coverage, the AWARE float and message was presented to the public in the article in neutral (instead of their usually dismissive) tones. |

being the tail of the AWARE group that day I will just add my observations. The crowd was quite civil and often very quiet ( most of our applause seemed to end when we turned onto Florida) I heard two comments from the audience "support our troops" and "we can have both" I am assuming this is the military and schools.
We were the only group with 3 police on bicycles. Behind us was an ambulance and fire truck both enjoyed using their sirens excessively even after one AWARE member asked if they could not use the sirens so much. It was VERY loud. The police were less than helpful when I asked one of them to talk to the ambulance driver. |
