Building and construction trades union members picket non-union work site at the corner of Neil and Kirby in Champaign. Horve Builders, they say, are the construction managers and are using all non-union labor. Hence the rat. |

(Champaign) If you've driven by the corner of Neil and Kirby in Champaign recently, you may have noticed this oversized rodent and some union picketers in front of the construction site there. The work is all contracted to non-union firms, says a representative of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
Union electrical workers had been picketing the site in early December, but the IBEW apparently had to pull their members off the picket line for "legal reasons" once the non-union electrical contractor was no longer on site. Carpenters, plumbers and other building trades unions continue to maintain the picket.
The building trades unions expect the picket to continue about 3-4 months, throughout he construction of the new Homewood Suites hotel next to the existing Hilton Gardens. The picketers enjoy a honk and a wave, and generally appreciate community support. |
