FCC proposes changes to LPFM rules

The FCC has recently proposed changes to the rules governing LPFM stations like WRFU. Below are the comments I submitted to their "Second Notice of Proposed RuleMaking" (2NPRM):

My name is Andrew Ó Baoill, and I am station manager of WRFU-LP, a radio station in Urbana, IL, that is one of the beneficiaries and progeny of the LPFM licensing regime. I am in addition a PhD student at the Institute of Communications Research at the University of Illinois, where my research focuses on the role of community radio. I write today to express my support for the actions the Commission has undertaken to facilitate the growth and development of the LPFM sector, to underscore the benefits that the LPFM service has brought to our community, and to respond to some of the questions asked in the Second Notice regarding how best to foster the stability and further growth of this valuable service as we look to the future.

Junk News Is Making Us Sick

Junk News Is Making Us Sick
By Josh Silver

Today in the Congress, powerful US Senators from both parties berated FCC Chairman Kevin Martin about his plans to open the floodgates of media consolidation across America on December 18th. And Martin didn't flinch.

It's easy to stand firm when you have the backing of the White House and a seven digit paycheck waiting for you when you quit your job.

Opposition to media titans like Rupert Murdoch buying up more media is a reaction to the pathetic state of the journalism and entertainment. To drive home the point, Free Press launched a 3-minute "Junk Media" video to sound the alarm, and rally opposition to the December 18th vote:

Last time Big Media tried this, nearly 3 million people - from the left and right - rose up and said no.

They're doing it again at www.stopbigmedia.com

A little WRFU History :)

Hey all,

So I was poking around the great Internet looking for pictures of our studio and stumbled upon the photographer who documented the barnraising. I found this to be pretty exciting because I got involved right after the studio was put up. Like most of us we have no idea exactly how WRFU got here and how.

I am not the one to tell you the whole story but in short the U-C IMC and the Socialist Forum got lucky working with the Prometheus Radio Project taking advantage of a very small window of opprotunity by the FCC to give out low power (LP) transmissions licenses. Well we got one and the Prometheus Radio Project came out here and helped us install a radio station in 3 days with our first day on air November 13th, 2005.

Below is a very quick slide show of what happened in 3 days! (requires flash)
